Presented by Sturgis Library at Sturgis Library, Barnstable MA

The Artist and the Underworld: A Philosophical Look at Demons in Art History

Join Local Artist Michelle Dugan for an evening or Art History at Sturgis Library!

Demons have long been used to symbolize the dark counterpart of light. An image of sin, artists have personified the unwanted traits within ourselves, and given them faces, along with horns and tails. We’ll explore the use of demons and devils within art as a way to examine our own human nature. Facing your demons may just be more enlightening than you thought! Among the artists to be discussed are Albrecht Durer, Gustave Dore, and William Blake.
