"THE GIFT" is a two act play by Steve Lyons that takes place in the 1960’s. The themes of racial and social divisions and the conflict between science and religion are as relevant today as they were in this tumultuous time in our cultural history. Moving back to his southern Appalachian home to restore the medical practice of his deceased father, a young Thom Riddle meets and falls in love with Eshie, the beautiful black Evangelist, who is blessed with the gift of tongues. Further complicating their love affair is his questioning of her faith and this perceived “gift.” This sets off a series of events and emotions that opens up the racial and social divisions of the community, of his family and of her church’s pastor, a dynamic and commanding man, who is a pivotal force in the unfolding events that lead Eshie to her true voice.
